In the Old Testament times, a name was not only identification, but an identity as well. Many times a special meaning was attached to the name, and names had a descriptive purpose. Throughout Scripture God reveals Himself to us through His names. When we study the names that He reveals to us in the Bible, we will better understand who God really is. The meanings behind God’s names reveal the essential personality and nature of the One who bears them.
For example, check out Jehovah Jireh, our Provider; Jehovah Shalom, our Lord of Peace. And there’s El Shaddai, the Lord God Almighty; and Jehovah Rapha, our Lord that Heals. I can go on but what is important is that you realize who God is to you. His name is hallowed and should be honored. God knows us by our name; shouldn’t we know Him by His?
And in that day you will say:
“Praise the LORD, call upon His name; declare His deeds among the peoples, Make mention that His name is exalted. Sing to the LORD, For He has done excellent things; this is known in all the earth.” Isaiah 12:4-5 (NKJV)

If his name is to be holy, don’t you think it is important to know and use his name?
