Seeking the Kingdom

“But seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you, Matthew 6:33”

Are you seeking the Kingdom of God? How can you tell if you are indeed seeking the Kingdom of God? These are very valid questions and very important. Since it is a command to seek first the Kingdom of God, then it holds true that we should know what the Kingdom of God is, what we are seeking.

By definition a kingdom is a place, a realm where a king rules. This definition could hold true naturally and spiritually. In the natural, a king is the sovereign ruler over his territory, his kingdom. All who dwell in his kingdom are under his authority. You have seen the Robin Hood movies, where the King can take what he wants and make the people do what he wants, no questions asked. In short, what ever the King wants, the King gets.

There are two aspects of the Kingdom of God. There is the future Kingdom and the present Kingdom. The future Kingdom of God has to do with the thousand-year reign of Christ. I will touch on that at a later time. Also, in most cases the Kingdom of God and the Kingdom of Heaven are interchangeable but there are a few exceptions. I will touch on that at a later time as well. My focus at this time is on the present aspect of the Kingdom.

“…Most assuredly I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the Kingdom of God,” John 3:3. The Strong’s definition of Kingdom is the rule or realm, which comes from a root word, meaning sovereign King. This is the prerequisite for seeking the Kingdom of God. You need to be able to see the realm of God.

“Most assuredly I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the Kingdom of God,” John 3:5. This is the only way one can even enter into the realm of God, the Kingdom of God. Those who are changed, from the inside out, are in a position to seek the Kingdom of God.

“Envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like: of the which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the Kingdom of God,” Galatians 5:21. The word “inherit” comes from a Greek word meaning obtain. If you practice envy, and the like, you cannot obtain the kingdom of God.

With these three points in mind, what is the conclusion of the matter? When we seek first the Kingdom of God, we are seeking God’s rule in our lives. Only when you accept God’s rule/reign over your life, will you enter into the realm of blessings. After we enter into the Kingdom of God, or first agenda should be the seek God’s authority, God’s rule in our lives. God should be able to tell us what to do, when to do it and how to do it, no questions asked. We are his people and he wants control. New Christians never learn about seeking first the kingdom and some go years before experiencing the Kingdom of God.

Matthew goes on to say “and his righteousness”. The Greek word for righteousness carries the meaning of character. God will never make us obey him, unlike a King in the natural realm. God allows us to choose him and his ways. We need to seek out God’s character and experience the “all these things will be added unto you”. Read Matthew 6:25 -33 and see what is meant by “these things”.

When we seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, we are looking for all that God is, to rule and reign in every situation of life. God is love, God is our healer, God is omnipotent (powerful), God is faithful, God is salvation, God is a supplier of needs, God is true, God will never leave you, God is holy, God is just, God is from everlasting to everlasting, God is omniscient (knows all), God is all in all, God is I am that I am, and so much more. Is it any wonder why we need to seek the rule of God in every situation of life?

Do you want to be changed; do you want to be like Christ? Then began to seek first the rule of God in your life and he will meet every need that you have.

One last thought; seeking the Kingdom of God is a process. Every minute of the day, I must choose to allow God to take control of my life, my thoughts, my desires, my decisions, everything. Practice the presence of the King, and yield to him. How? Not my will Lord but your will be done.

“…for the Kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Ghost..”
