What’s Love Got To Do With It? Part Three
This is the curx of the Love Walk. The flesh wants to do it’s thing while the Holy Spirit is trying to lead and guide you into all truth and righteousness. Unfortunately for many Christians the flesh (the lower nature) is stonger than their spirit. Even though they desire to follow the Holy Spirit they are powerless to do so. Simply put, “the good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I will not to do, that I practice” Romans 7:19.
“For if I know the law but still can’t keep it, and if the power of sin within me keeps sabotaging my best intentions, I obviously need help! I realize that I don’t have what it takes. I can will it, but I can’t do it. I decide to do good, but I don’t really do it; I decide not to do bad, but then I do it anyway. My decisions, such as they are, don’t result in actions. Something has gone wrong deep within me and gets the better of me every time”. Romans 7:22-23. (Message Bible)
The answer to this problem is to follow the leading of the Holy Spirit, Galations 5:18. To follow the leading of God is to deny selfish desires and yield to the Holy Spirit. It takes practice to deny self. We follow self without even thinking about it. The first key to overcoming self (flesh) is being aware of the choices we make. The second key is to make a conscious choice to follow the Holy Spirit.
Self (flesh) is the opposite of agape. Remember, agape is self-less, unconditional; not looking for anything in return. Living the love walk requires that you “put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering, bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if any one has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. but above all these things, put on love, which is the bond of perfection”. Colossians 3:12-15 Perfection in this scripture means complete, of full age. Love completely binds all the virtues together.
So, herein lies your responsibility. You either allow yourself to continue in fleshy activities (see Galatians 5:19-21) or choose to allow the Holy Spirit to control your life, and as a result, He wil produce fruit (see Galatians 5:22-23). “Wear love. It’s your basic, all purpose garment. Never be without it”. Colossians 3:14 (Message Bible)
Living the Love Walk requires the highest form of love, agape. Without agape you will never experience the freedom that comes with selflessness.
Agape is not a natural occurrence, it is a spiritual activity.
