“This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine. Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.”
I can clearly remember singing this song when I was a child, as well as in my adult years, and I can honestly say I had no idea of its significance, or the message I was speaking into the atmosphere. This song declares I have a light inside me; a light that shall not be hidden, quenched, darkened nor jaded. This light originates in my heart, because that is where Jesus resides. My heart is lit from within by the Light Source of the universe. God gave me this light so that others would see me clearly, and so that I would never find myself walking in the dark.
I shine because I must! I shine because I can’t do otherwise. I am a light, a woman of witness. I am the walking embodiment of the message God wants to bring to the world. I am called to share the gospel – the good news of our redemption by Christ’s sacrifice of life; the good news of our reconciliation to God; the good news of His forgiveness of our sin; the good news of the free gift of salvation. I shine because I must draw attention to that which has brought me out of darkness, with the hope that others will follow. You also have a light. Why not shine with me!
14 You are the light that gives light to the world. A city that is built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 And people don’t hide a light under a bowl. They put it on a lamp stand so the light shines for all the people in the house. 16 In the same way, you should be a light for other people. Live so that they will see the good things you do and will praise your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:15-16 (NCV)
